Scar Tissue

Scar tissue is the fibrous connective tissue which can be found on any tissue on the body, including skin and internal organs. If you have ever had an injury, cut, surgery , repetitive strain or disease, and then healed, you have scar tissue.  Other than with minor cuts and scrapes, scarring is a common result of any bodily damage.

It’s not the scar itself that is the problem, it’s the adhesions formed underneath the scar holding tissues together so that they can no longer move freely. Scar tissue is paler and denser because it has a limited blood supply;  it is limited in function, including movement, circulation, and sensation.   As more scar tissue builds up, from lack of movement, muscles themselves can become shorter and weaker causing pain and disfunction.

Scar Massage Indications
Massage can be used on any scar which is completely healed. You do not want to massage open wounds or incisions which have just healed on the top layer. Make sure the wound is thoroughly healed before beginning a massage program for scar reduction.

You are a candidate for Scar Work if you have had:

  • breast augmentation ( reduction or enhancement )

  • c-section child birth

  • joint replacement

  • open heart surgery

  • sports injury

  • surgeons incision

Scar Tissue Removal

Scar tissue is not as strong and stable as healthy tissue, Massage Therapists are trained with specific techniques to help re-align scar tissue, reducing the appearance of scars, increase function of tissue and reduce aches and pains from surrounding tissue.
